이번 주말에 중요한 휴가를 축하했다. 중국과 한국에서 가장 큰 명절 중에 하나가 설날인다. 설날 당안 때부분 사람들이 가족 모두 방문하고 여러 전통 활동들을 지키는다 얘를 들면 전통 음식 요리하고 떡국 먹고 나이가 많은 사람을 존경하도록 새배를 한다.  전통적으로 시댁에 방문하지만 제 하숙집이 친정에 갔다. 제 하숙집 엄마의 고향이 아주 작아서 가족랑 같이 갈 수 없었다. 그러므로 제 NSLI 친구 헤리와 헤리의 하숙칩랑 같이 묵어야 됐다. 저는 제 하숙집 보고 싶을 거라고 생각했지만 헤리의 집에서 묵을 거니까 신났다.

지하철역에서 헤리의 집까지 길을 몰랐으니까 목요일 아침에 철산역에서 헤리가 만났고 같이 집에 걸었다. 도착했을 때 헤리의 하숙집 엄마가 만났고 저녁 식사를 했다. 헤리의 하숙집 엄마가 아주 작한과 이타적인 시람이네요. 먹으면서 많이 이야기 했고 시간이 즐겁게 보냈다. 이번 밤에 헤리랑 같이 알라스카에 대해서 영화를 봤고 더 이야기 했다. 다음 아침에 서울 랜드 놀이공원에 가 봤다. 서울 랜드에서 우리 친구 알랙스가 만났고 롤러코스트들을 많이 탔고 썰매를 지쳤다. 집에 돌라갔을 때 저녁 식사 하고나서 쉬었다. 토요일 아침에 설날을 축하했다. 헤리의 하숙집 엄마가 전통 음식을 많이 요리했는데도 먼저 새배 했다. 제가와 헤리와 남동생랑 같이 부모님한테 존경하고 나서 새배돈 받았다. 헤리의 하숙집 남동생들이 특별하게 신났다. 새배 후에 많이 먹었고 전통 활동과 음식에 대해서 이야기 했다. 3년 전에 한국에 살았을 때 가족랑 같이설날 축하했지만 이 경험 특별하고 기억할 만한 경험 이었다. 제 모두 가족과 친구한테: 새해복 많이 받으세요!

This weekend we celebrated an important holiday in Korea. In both Korea and China, one of the biggest holidays of the year is called “Seolnal” (also known as Lunar New Year). During Seolnal most people visit their family and do traditional activities such as cooking large meals together, eating ddukguuk (a kind of soup)  and performing “Saebae” as a way to show respect to elders. Traditionally, families travel to the house of the husband’s family, however, my host family went to my host mom’s hometown instead. Because her family’s apartment in her hometown is very small, I wasn’t able to go with them so I had to stay with my NSLI friend Haley’s host family while they were away. Although I knew I would miss spending this time with my host family, I was excited to stay at Haley’s house.

Since I didn’t know the way from the subway station to Haley’s apartment, I met her at the station and we walked together to her house. When we arrived, I met her host mom and we all had dinner. Her host mom was such a nice and selfless person! While we ate we talked a lot and had a very enjoyable time. That night, Haley and I watched a movie about Alaska and talked some more. The next morning we went to an amusement park called Seoul Land. We met our friend Alex there and we rode a bunch of roller coasters and even went sledding. When we got back home we ate dinner and hung out. Saturday morning we celebrated Seolnal. Haley’s host mom made a lot of traditional foods but first we paid respect by doing SaeBae. Haley, Haley’s host brothers, and I all bowed low to Haley’s host parents and touched our heads to the ground, showing full respect. After this (as is traditional for Saebae) we received money to wish us luck for the new year ahead. Haley’s host brothers were especially excited about this part. 🙂  After Saebae we all ate together and talked more about traditional Seolnal activities and foods. Even though I celebrated Seolnal with my family when I lived in Korea 3 years ago, this Seolnal was definitely a special and memorable experience.
